Dreamers
Dreamers
The images of the sleeping inhabitants of Shanghai are the result of my photographic inquiry into the nature of urban space. In Poland where I come from, sleeping is an intimate activity, culturally confined to one’s own home, apartment or bedroom, guarded by a ritual of closing the curtains. Meandering the streets of Asian cities at night, I was surprised to discover people sleeping outside: motionless, resting, extraordinary yet somehow feeling like a harmonious part of the cityscape. I was captivated by how they seemed to visually fit the location where they chose to rest. The makeshift “beds” became an “extension” of sleeping, embracing them tightly in the intimate atmosphere of dreams.
